The Band’s iconic “Music From Big Pink” is getting the deluxe treatment from Capitol. Bob Clearmountain went back to the original four-track analog masters and made a completely new stereo mix. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman mastering cut the lacquers at 45 RPM, hopefully directly from analog tape.
All-time hits on this album include “The Weight,” “Tears of Rage,” and “I Shall Be Released.”
This album’s fascinating history on vinyl includes an original release that was bass limited below 80Hz. As the story goes, the great Robert Ludwig produced an early “hot” cut that was rejected by Capitol for bass that wouldn’t track on kiddy stereos without the “needle” jumping out of the groove.
